You must have heard of popping, locking and dropping, well, that is the popular Old School dance styles, which made waves back in the early seventies. However, with changing times, people moved on to much more energetic and free dancing style, named as Hip Hop, which was regarded to be the New School counterpart. With less movements on the floor, this style became popular with habits such as c-walk, etc.

The music got evolved too, receiving a makeover by Hip Hop, and bringing in new styles like, rapping and beat boxing, all of which grew out from the famous New York City area of South Bronx. Music and dance is incomplete with the costumes, and for the New School version, loose clothing made its name, since it allowed for free movement.

Sweat pants and loose trousers made their way for dancers, since they allowed them to transfer or move around with ease. However, they weren’t too baggy, which might end up giving them a hurdle. For the upper part of the body, tight T’s and loose T’s were preferred for females and males respectively, and for a more stylish look, some people do wear hooded jackets.

However, the most attention goes to the shoes, since they are official mode of movement for all the dancers, so they need to be perfect in all ways. Shoes which allow for comfortable movement on the floor, without getting stuck to it, are the ones that almost all dancers used. And they are popular, as they don’t put a strain of the legs, when the dancers swing or jump, etc.

Being funky, Hip Hop encourage other accessories too, like bands and at times, jewelry as well. One more thing that came along with the New School era was graffiti, which is widely connected to Hip Hop, making them blend with each other quite well.

One distinct benefit of an online dance school can create a huge, strong salsa community which enables the student to feel part of a group and share experiences with other avid salsa dancers. They have websites, online forums and networking sites that cater to this. This will not only promote camaraderie but your social skills as well.

Postcards can help promote and attract new students for your dance school. Here are tips that you can apply on your dance school’s next batch of postcards!

Heart Warming Tips for Your Dance School Postcards

- Production of a database to track upcoming birthdays. This is also an efficient way for you to remember unique details about your students, like their personal preferences in anything from food to clothing. Having these details about your students will make your prints more personal when you start writing your messages.

- Creating templates for your postcard is not a problem. You can have just a single design, and change only the message that you will be writing by hand. A combination of birthday images and your dance school can be a good mix for a design. Make sure that the people receiving your cards will immediately be able to determine that it came from your school; make them simple yet interesting.

- Postcards will only be effective if you are capable of producing them right. One great way to produce them affordably, in bulk, and with the least hassle on your part is through online printing. In many cases, you can edit design templates provided by an online printer, or upload one of your own to send to the presses.

- Finally, print postcards with the right attitude in mind. You’re not making these cards just for business; you should be making them because you genuinely care about your students as well.

In this article, we’ve outlined to you how to promote your dance school through postcards by maintaining contact with your former students, in the hopes that the good impression you keep with them long after they’ve paid you their tuition fee will encourage them to recommend your school to other people. Still, if this does not happen the way you want it to go, fret not! You never know what other opportunities are waiting in store for your dance school by keeping in touch with your students. Mix this promotional idea with your other marketing campaigns for the continued growth of your dance school!

Ballroom dancing is a great hobby, pastime and for some competitive activity. Getting started however can at times seem daunting so what’s the best way forward? Well it depends on several things such as what you want to achieve and the facilities available in your area

Before hitting the dance floor it is important to learn basic ballroom dancing moves and familiarize yourself with commonly used dance terms.

Rock Step is a slow sequence of two steps where the weight is transferred from one foot to another and then back. Rock back and rock forward are two basic versions.

Ball Change is also a sequence of two steps involving a partial weight transfer from the ball of one foot to another.

Kick Ball Change is a popular swing dance step that consists of a kick followed by the ball change. The timing is usually a split beat count of 1&2 or 1a2. Kick ball change has three distinct moves: a kick with the left foot, a slight push off the floor by the ball of the left foot behind the right foot, and a step with the right foot.

Triple step is also popular in swing dances. Three steps are performed on two beats of music, with the first step taken on count 1, the second step on the half beat between counts 1&2, and the final step on count 2. Also called a shuffle step, triple step is done in quick-quick-slow sequences, often counted as one-and-two or three-and-four.

Often a follower’s step in West Coast Swing, Coaster Step is a back-together-forward or forward-together-back triple step danced to the timing of quick-quick-slow.

Anchor Step is the concluding triple step pattern of nearly all main West Coast Swing dance moves. An anchor step ends with partners settling their weights on the back foot, hands held L-to-R, awaiting the leader’s next move.

Lock Step involves locking the moving foot as it approaches the standing foot. In this triple step pattern, the lower part of the moving leg crosses in front of or behind the lower part of the standing leg in the direction of the approach. Lock step is often used in quickstep and cha-cha moves.

One of the more popular basic ballroom dancing moves, grapevine includes side steps and steps across the support foot. It is a continuous traveling step pattern to the side with alternating crosses behind and in front of the supporting foot.

You’ll probably have many options for dance schools you can attend. It may sound new age but very often your heart will make the right decision. If you have your heart set on a particular school or studio and it’s always been you dream to go there, then going with your heart will more times than not be the right decision.

If your heart is not set on a certain dance school though there are several things you may wish to consider. The first is where you want to go with your dancing and what you will learn at the dance school.

For example an aspiring ballerina would not think of going to anything other than a ballet school, however people who wanted to star in Broadway or Westend shows have made the decision to go to a ballet school and later regretted it because they realised they needed skills in other styles like tap or jazz as well as ballet to succeed.

Most of the time common sense will tell you the subjects and dance styles you’ll need to learn to succeed in your chosen field in dance. If you’re unsure ask other experienced dancers or do your research on the internet to find out which dance styles you should be concentrating on.

Dancers in certain dance styles aren’t required to go to a dance school and come out with a degree. In this case you should seek out the best teachers and trainers you can in your field.

For example if all you want to be is a popper, you’ll most likely find there aren’t any full-time schools specialising in this. So you’ll be responsible for your own education and may want to seek out people like the Electric Boogaloos (staying with the popping example) or other pioneers in the field.

Even if you don’t need to go to a dance school for the area of dance you want to get into you’ll probably find it beneficial as it’ll make you more employable. Sometimes unexpectedly your skills in one arena of dance will open doors in another area.

One other thing is to find teachers who’ll want to help you succeed and believe in and understand you. If your teachers play down your goals, or don’t understand what you want to achieve they probably aren’t right for you.

When you visit the school you should enjoy the atmosphere as you’ll be spending a lot of time there and having fun on any open days or summer short courses is a great indicator that you would enjoy being at the school on a more permanent basis.
