Dance today is a multicultural mix of international influences, namely – tap, Indian, modern, flamenco, tango, jazz, ballet, folk, Chinese, Hip Hop and more. Just as every species of fish comes in different shapes and sizes, there are also signature qualities that distinguish each type of dance form. How does a teacher decide when a dancer can go onto pointe?

I have mentioned a few times in my articles about ballet shoes and pointe shoes, that it is a good strategy to start doing strengthening exercises for the feet before starting classes in pointe shoes.

One or two classes a week will not prepare the feet, or whole body, for pointe work. Three classes a week for at least a year will enhance the preparation, but even then, to achieve the optimum strength there are exercises a student can do every day.

The dancers I talk to seem very motivated to get into a class, so I am assuming that adding an exercise regimen to their already busy day would not be a problem.

Lisa Howell, a dance medicine specialist, has written a wonderful training series for young students who aspire to do pointe work.

She explains many fine points of anatomy, especially of the foot structure and muscles. She covers turnout, hip placement, and more.

Students wonder “do I have the right arches for pointe?” ….”do I have the right toes, the right ankles, enough turnout?”….”why does my teacher say I’m not ready?”

I’ve always advocated holding a student back, if there is the slightest reservation in my mind about putting her on pointe. Weak technique in any area can be improved, so why risk an injury or deviated growth pattern in a child?

Concentration and awareness is extremely important in ballet class. It is recreational for many children, but there comes a time when dedication is required to ensure safety.

This dedication has to show up before pointe work begins.

Developing good technique in ballet, means pushing your physique to the max without sacrificing
safety. Preserving the integrity of the joints and muscles may mean a restraint of advancement. Fellow students who are a little older, more physically developed and stronger, may go into pointe class sooner than others who are not.

I’ve had students who are “born pros”. When I’ve had to hold them back in some way, I explain exactly why and they really get it. They are willing to build strength for good dance technique, knowing that they will catch up once the strength has been established.

This attitude reflects a positive outlook and a visionary one. Children are more than capable of this. Whether or not they have a great talent, some have an instinct for the more productive approach to their progress. They are ready to suffer (and they do!) a short term disappointment.

It’s truly difficult for a teacher to work out a long range plan for every individual student, to get them to build strength for future pointe work.

If a student can find a prepared series of assessments and exercises, and can assess her own progress, the ones who want to advance in this way, will. This strategy will help prevent injuries and teach the dancer to avoid dancing in pain.

Dancers also require sport drill and techniques in order to perfect their moves and enhance the required rigorous stamina. Consistent drills that work the leg muscles and coordinate the heels and toes should be sufficient for dancers to move effortlessly.

Good dance technique can be the most efficient way to execute a given step, but technique is a lot more than just putting steps together. It is the distinctive look, or a particular style or attitude, and the method of joining the steps together. All dance forms should have specific exercises that have been developed to train the technique in that specific dance form, so that the body is able to fulfill the choreographic needs of that type of dance form.

Good technique is the mastery of the mechanics and an awareness of form. It is the ability to show proper alignment and placement of different parts of the body. Technique is easier if you have strong and flexible muscles, and the correct training to execute a given movement.

To achieve good dance technique, a dancer needs to inhance his or her awareness on how his or her body moves on its own, or with others in a group. The dancer needs to learn how to control and direct body energy, and increase sensitivity to rhythm and space.

Once the dancer achieves all the above goals, good dance technique will appear effortless. Once a dancer has a good technical grounding, the dancer will be able to add character and nuances to the movements and move into the realm of artistry.

Most good dancing schools will have a good foundation for building up a dancers technique. A good example of this is the bar work in the ballet class, or the floor work in the modern jazz class.

Bringing in other influences will also help to build up a dancers strength and good technique. A good example of this is Horton Technique, Graham Technique or Pilates.

Horton technique trains a fluid use of the limbs. It also addresses choreographic concepts such as weight placement, changing shapes, changing levels, volume and tempo and at the same time strengthens and stretches the entire body.

Pilates is excellent for strengthening the core muscles which play such an important part of any dancers body.

Martha Graham also inspired a technique of logical strengthening and stretching exercises that also amplify the body’s capabilities in dancing.

Having good technique is the dancers building block to perfecting his or her dancing skills. Nowadays there are loads of different classes that you can do to improve you dance technique and strengthen your body.

You must have heard of popping, locking and dropping, well, that is the popular Old School dance styles, which made waves back in the early seventies. However, with changing times, people moved on to much more energetic and free dancing style, named as Hip Hop, which was regarded to be the New School counterpart. With less movements on the floor, this style became popular with habits such as c-walk, etc.

The music got evolved too, receiving a makeover by Hip Hop, and bringing in new styles like, rapping and beat boxing, all of which grew out from the famous New York City area of South Bronx. Music and dance is incomplete with the costumes, and for the New School version, loose clothing made its name, since it allowed for free movement.

Sweat pants and loose trousers made their way for dancers, since they allowed them to transfer or move around with ease. However, they weren’t too baggy, which might end up giving them a hurdle. For the upper part of the body, tight T’s and loose T’s were preferred for females and males respectively, and for a more stylish look, some people do wear hooded jackets.

However, the most attention goes to the shoes, since they are official mode of movement for all the dancers, so they need to be perfect in all ways. Shoes which allow for comfortable movement on the floor, without getting stuck to it, are the ones that almost all dancers used. And they are popular, as they don’t put a strain of the legs, when the dancers swing or jump, etc.

Being funky, Hip Hop encourage other accessories too, like bands and at times, jewelry as well. One more thing that came along with the New School era was graffiti, which is widely connected to Hip Hop, making them blend with each other quite well.

One distinct benefit of an online dance school can create a huge, strong salsa community which enables the student to feel part of a group and share experiences with other avid salsa dancers. They have websites, online forums and networking sites that cater to this. This will not only promote camaraderie but your social skills as well.

Postcards can help promote and attract new students for your dance school. Here are tips that you can apply on your dance school’s next batch of postcards!

Heart Warming Tips for Your Dance School Postcards

- Production of a database to track upcoming birthdays. This is also an efficient way for you to remember unique details about your students, like their personal preferences in anything from food to clothing. Having these details about your students will make your prints more personal when you start writing your messages.

- Creating templates for your postcard is not a problem. You can have just a single design, and change only the message that you will be writing by hand. A combination of birthday images and your dance school can be a good mix for a design. Make sure that the people receiving your cards will immediately be able to determine that it came from your school; make them simple yet interesting.

- Postcards will only be effective if you are capable of producing them right. One great way to produce them affordably, in bulk, and with the least hassle on your part is through online printing. In many cases, you can edit design templates provided by an online printer, or upload one of your own to send to the presses.

- Finally, print postcards with the right attitude in mind. You’re not making these cards just for business; you should be making them because you genuinely care about your students as well.

In this article, we’ve outlined to you how to promote your dance school through postcards by maintaining contact with your former students, in the hopes that the good impression you keep with them long after they’ve paid you their tuition fee will encourage them to recommend your school to other people. Still, if this does not happen the way you want it to go, fret not! You never know what other opportunities are waiting in store for your dance school by keeping in touch with your students. Mix this promotional idea with your other marketing campaigns for the continued growth of your dance school!

It is vital that the couple assess how well their musical preferences mesh with the reception venue. Because wedding party songs underscore the mood of the party, it is important to consider the type of music to be played. At the end of your wedding celebrations, you want to make sure that everyone has had a good time. Music can greatly increase the potential for a joyful wedding party.

It is possible that the theme and location of your wedding may guide musical selections. For example, weddings with distinctly beach oriented or Caribbean influences might dictate that wedding party songs reflect those thematic choices. It would be appropriate then, to play soca, calypso, or reggae tunes.

Soca is a form of dance music native to Trinidad. Heavily influenced by Indian instruments and Caribbean drumming, it is a fusion of soul, calypso and percussion melodies. Machal Montano, Kevin Little, Alyson Hinds and Mama Verde are popular contemporary soca artists.

Calypso music is similar to soca, except it is more heavily influenced by its African and French roots. This form of music is common not only to Trinidad, but to many other British and Fresh Caribbean islands. The Mighty Sparrow is a classic calypso artist.

Reggae music has varied throughout the years. Its influences are widespread and the tone of this genre varies greatly from artist to artist. Bob Marley, Beanie Man, Cocoa Tea, Nasio and King Jammy are well liked reggae artists.

Some couples choose to take dancing lessons so that they can perform a certain dance for their first dance as husband and wife. If you have taken formal ballroom dancing lessons, you might like to play musical selections that enhance that romantic tone. Classical waltzes and fox trots are highly reminiscent of bygone eras. Artists such as Frank Sinatra will surely enhance the romantic atmosphere of the dance floor.

Always remember to think about the words of the music you select. Many people choose fun or popular songs without realizing that the words expressed are not positive endearments. For example, Whitney Houston’s breathtaking rendition of “I Will Always Love You” is not a declaration of love, but a discussion of a breakup. Many couples select versions of this song while ignorant of its true message.

Wedding party songs may also reflect the heritage of the couple. Couples may use their musical selections to highlight cultural roots. This is not only appropriate, but ideal because it will honor your heritage.

If you are Irish, Senegalese, Puerto Rican or from another nation, you may want to consider invoking those musical influences into the musical repertoire. Be sure to make your music inclusive. This is particularly important when representing diverse heritages.

Choosing wedding party songs is a fun task. Simply remember to be true to the location and style of your wedding. Additionally, be sensitive to the preferences of both the bride and groom.
