Rambert Dance Company is Britain’s flagship contemporary dance company. It was formed by Marie Rambert, a polish teacher of dance. From its earliest days the Rambert Company has transported its passionate and creative zest for dance across the globe, delighting audiences at every stop. The Rambert Dance Company ‘s roots stem from 1919 in London where Marie RAmbert started teaching dance under the name of the Rambert School.

In 1926 the Rambert School officially morphed into the Rambert Dance Company. So in fact, the Rambert is Britain’s longest running dance company. Some of the key tenets of Marie Rambert’s teachings were that individual creativity, feeling, and integrity were to be highly valued and encouraged. Rambert summed this up in her famous proclamation that her dancers would not be churned out of “a sausage factory”. Perhaps as a result of this drive for individual expression, the Rambert Company is also famous for its exciting and inventive involvement with composers, musicians, visual artists as well as set and costume designers.

It is clear when experiencing any Rambert production that the live music backdrop heightens the sentiments experienced by all involved, dancers and audience alike. Presently, the Rambert Dance Company works closely with the London Musici, a fresh and innovative orchestra that is highly versatile and therefor able to perform many different styles of music. At this point in time, the London Musici has collaborated with the Rambert Dance Company for over ten years. In global terms and in this area of the arts, the relationship between the Rambert Company and the London Musici is something of a rarity.

Competition for places within the Rambert Dance Company itself is, as you can imagine, fierce; Rambert dancers are very highly regarded, being seen as some of the most technically able exponents of many different styles of dance. Such are their talents that dancers of the Rambert Company are considered theatre “athletes” who posess the ability to astound audiences with their technical skill and at the same time move them emotionally. It must be highly rewarding to belong to such a dance company; one that programs a varied body of work involving the efforts of extremely talented choreographers.

The Rambert Dance Company explicitly states that its primary objective is to make dance accessible for future audiences; an objective that is met as a consequence of Rambert’s philosophy of helping young and exciting choreographers to develop their skills. This is borne out by Rambert performances themselves. If you attend a Rambert event you will have a stimulating and inspiring experience; an experience you will share with others in the audience no matter how old you are or where you are from. The combination of the skill of the Rambert dancers, the abilities of the musicians as well as the dramatic ambience created through the set design and costumes provides superior entertainment year round to thousands.
